That in March of this year the Burbank City Council adopted a Shopping Cart Containment Ordinance that establishes rules for the containment of shopping carts within the confines of each business.
In summary, before this ordinance was adopted, there were no requirements for businesses to keep their carts on their premises. After September 23rd, removal of shopping carts from the premises will be illegal.
Business owners who do not enforce the ordinance will be fined up to $1,000 and/or up to 6 months in prison.
There may be some differing views on this, but from a community beautification standpoint, I love it! After all, the carts are the property of the business and solely intended to help you get your things to the check out and your car.
A few years ago my son moved to Boston to go to college. One of the first things I bought for him was a portable shopping cart. Back east nearly everyone has a cart they can roll from the stores to their apartment. I thought that was a great idea! Looks like this will/should be an item that will be plentiful soon!
So if you are a Burbank or Toluca Lake resident, or someone who lives in one of the surrounding communities, and are shopping at any of the local stores, please don’t take the cart off the premises!
